EPALSCO Ltd Continues Maintenance of 150-Hectare Avocado Orchard in Bugesera

EPALSCO Ltd, in partnership with Keza Company, is successfully implementing the Bugesera Avocado Orchard Project in Gashora Sector, Bugesera District. The project covers 150 hectares of avocado plantations and contributes to sustainable agriculture, climate resilience, and economic development in the region.
During the reporting period, the project team focused on maintaining the established orchard to ensure healthy tree growth and long-term productivity. Key activities included weeding, pruning, pest and disease monitoring, replacement of dead seedlings, irrigation management, and application of organic manure around young trees. Regular field inspections were also conducted to assess tree performance and identify areas requiring additional support.
Despite experiencing prolonged dry conditions characteristic of the Bugesera region, the orchard continues to show encouraging progress. Most avocado trees have established well, with improved survival rates and healthy vegetative growth observed across the plantation. Maintenance interventions have helped reduce weed competition, improve soil moisture conservation, and enhance overall orchard health.
The project demonstrates EPALSCO Ltd’s commitment to promoting climate-smart agriculture and sustainable land management practices. By establishing and maintaining this large-scale avocado orchard, the initiative is expected to contribute to environmental restoration, create employment opportunities, and support future avocado production for local and export markets. The project aligns with ongoing efforts to strengthen agricultural resilience and landscape restoration in Bugesera, an area recognized for its need for sustainable land management and climate adaptation measures.
